What is the optimal temperature for AC if I am away for few weeks
As the summer nears many people start preparing themselves to go away on vacation. One of the things that they will often consider is what temperature they should set the air conditioning before they leave or if they should just shut it off altogether. If you have a thermostat that is programmable you can easily set the temperature to 85 degrees and then have it lower just before you return so you don’t come home to a hot house. Even if your thermostat is not programmable you will still want to consider turning to to 80 or 85 degrees, just be aware that your home will be really warm when you come back. It is not wise to turn your air conditioning system off completely when you leave. You will want to make sure that the air in your home is still circulating. If your home gets too hot then it can affect things like your wood floor, your doors and even your cabinets.
Humidity level is another factor you want to consider when you set up your thermostat
Your air conditioning system does not just cool your home but it also helps to remove the humidity from the air. If you shut off your air conditioner entirely then you can be certain that mold and other forms of bacteria will begin to grow. This is why many homes will begin to develop a musty smell after the air conditioner has been shut off for an extended period of time. The excess humidity can cause the paint to start peeling in areas and can even cause wooden furniture and flooring to warp. Making sure that your home stays at a reasonable temperature will also help to conserve energy. Your refrigerator and freezer will not need to work so hard and it can protect your sensitive electronic devices. Although it can be very tempting to just shut of the air conditioning if you are going away for an extended period of time that is never the best solution. You may save a little bit of energy in shutting it all off but you will end up doing more damage to your home and to your indoor air quality. If possible just set the thermostat to around 85 degrees and try to maintain a humidity level of about 50%. If you have a programmable thermostat you can often use a “vacation” function or if that is not available you can simply use the “hold” button so that your thermostat does not progress through its normal programmed routine.
